11 May 2020 - Guidance on seeing patients at Alert Level 2

Covid-19 Level 3

The Ministry of Health has set restrictions to osteopathic practice under Alert Level 3, and the Osteopathic Council has provided guidance to help practitioners consider individual cases under these restrictions.

The decision to treat a patient face-to-face under Alert Level 3 is a clinical judgement. As a regulator, the Osteopathic Council is not in a position to consider (or approve) individual cases, or to make clinical decisions on behalf of practitioners. The Osteopathic Council would likely only consider individual cases if there were concerns that non-urgent face-to-face treatment was being carried out, or that osteopathic practice was unsafe.

It is up to the practitioner to consider the guidance supplied, and determine:
• that the individual case meets the criteria detailed in the Osteopathic Council guidance (including considering the availability of other, existing, health care services);
• that the practitioner is able to mitigate any risks as much as possible (e.g. through the management of the clinical environment and the use of PPE) and;
• that the benefits of a face-to-face treatment outweigh the risks associated with the close proximity this requires.

The overarching guidance is that face-to-face care is to be considered a ‘last resort’, but that this may be deemed necessary to provide urgent care. We trust that practitioners will act with a high level of care and professionalism when determining how to best practice under Alert Level 3.
