Summary
If you wish to sit the Osteopathic Council examination, you should:
- first read this summary page; and
- the Osteopathic Council Examination General Guidelines (128.38 Kb); and
- the Examination Standards (150.81 Kb), and
- then send us your completed application form (152.58 Kb) and payment form (220.07 Kb) .
Examination Format
The examination is a clinically based assessment consisting of three consultations over a period of approximately four hours. Please refer to the Examination Standards (150.81Kb) for more detail.Examination Dates
Due to demand, examination places are rarely available at short notice. We recommend that you plan some months ahead and check with the Registrar as to when the next suitable available date might be.
Note: An examination date will not be confirmed until your application is complete and the deposit has been paid.
Eligibility to Sit the Examination
Those who are eligible to sit the Osteopathic Council Examination:- must hold an approved osteopathic qualification; and
- demonstrate an intention to practise osteopathy in New Zealand; and
- are domiciled in a country other than New Zealand or Australia; or
- are domiciled in Australia but are not registered as an osteopath in Australia; or
- are domiciled in New Zealand but do not have a prescribed qualification for registration as an osteopath; and
- attain an overall pass of 7.5 in the Academic IELTS test, with at least 7 in each band (when English is not their first language and/or their qualification was gained partly or entirely in another language); and
- have insurance for the examination to cover claims that may arise out of any one or all three of the consultations undertaken during the examination.

Your application must be received by the Council at least four weeks before your scheduled examination date.

After the Examination
Within 5 working days of your examination you will be informed as to whether or not you have passed. You will be given the Moderator's Report on the examination within four weeks of sitting the exam. The report sets out the reasons why the Council has/has not granted you a pass.Examination Review and Re-sit
You may request that the Council review its decision and failed candidates may apply to re-sit the examination. However, before allowing a re-sit, the Council must be assured that the issues giving rise to the fail grade have been remedied.Applying for Registration and Annual Practising Certificate
Passing the examination demonstrates your competency and you can apply for registration as an Osteopath in New Zealand. You will also need to demonstrate your fitness for registration e.g. no previous criminal convictions, before a Practising Certificate can be issued. You can apply for registration and a Practising Certificate at the same time, after receiving your examination results. Remember To
Ensure that you have professional indemnity insurance for the date of the exam and keep copies of:
- Your application
- All accompanying documents
- A note of the date on which they were sent to the Osteopathic Council
